Spray

The Spray hydroelectric facility is one of three TransAlta plants on the Spray system, which is part of the Bow River Electric System in Alberta. The plant uses the Spray Lakes storage reservoir which is created by the Canyon Dam, to the south, and the Three Sister Dam, to the north.

The Spray plant generates an average of 210,000 megawatt hours annually.

TransAlta’s hydroelectric plants primarily provide electricity during periods of peak electrical demand and ensure system stability. Their operating flexibility means they can start quickly to introduce hydro power within minutes, balancing out shortages due to unexpected outages, or providing power at times of high demand.

Environmental highlights

Protection of the environment is an important part of our hydro power business, as is responsible water use. We continually work with environmental and community groups to ensure habitats are protected, and that all users needs are heard.

Notice of Maintenance

TransAlta is conducting routine maintenance on the Spray Canal from July 28 to October 20, 2025.

TransAlta has completed essential maintenance on the Spray Canal system and will begin gradually refilling the canal over the coming days. Residents may notice rising water levels and crews onsite as part of this planned process, which is necessary to restore water supply and ensure system reliability.

The rewatering is being managed by TransAlta’s Dam Safety team with turbidity monitoring and regulatory compliance in place. We are working closely with the Town of Canmore and other stakeholders to minimize impacts and keep the community informed.

TransAlta’s hydro operations play a vital role in supporting Alberta’s electricity grid and managing water flows for municipalities, agricultural producers and other stakeholders year-round. This work is essential to ensure the long-term safety, efficiency and reliability of the Spray Hydro facility.
