Sundance 6

The Sundance 6 is located 70 kilometres west of Edmonton, Alberta, on the south shore of Wabamun Lake.

This is the first of six coal-fired generating units at Sundance was commissioned in 1970, and the sixth and final generating unit was commissioned in 1980. TransAlta converted the fuel source for Unit 6 at Sundance from coal to natural gas, allowing the plant to provide Albertans with clean, reliable and affordable electricity.

Unit status

Sundance Units 1-5 have been retired permanently. Unit 6 was mothballed on April 1, 2025.

Unit 1: Commissioned in 1970. Permanently retired on January 1, 2018
Unit 2: Commissioned in 1973. Mothballed on Jan. 1, 2018. Permanently retired on July 31, 2018
Unit 3: Commissioned in 1976. Mothballed on Apr. 1, 2018. Permanently retired on July 31, 2020
Unit 4: Commissioned in 1977. Permanently retired April 1, 2022
Unit 5: Commissioned in 1978. Permanently retired November 1, 2021.
Unit 6: Commissioned 1980. Converted to natural gas on February 1, 2021.
- Temporarily mothballed effective April 1, 2025 for a period of up to two years depending on market conditions. TransAlta maintains the flexibility to return the mothballed unit to service when market fundamentals or opportunities to contract are secured.
