Reliable generation supporting regional markets
Celebrating 30 years of operations in Western Australia
TransAlta has operated in Western Australia since 1996, providing firm, dispatchable generation that supports industrial customers and regional energy security.
Our Australian business includes the ownership and operation of critical energy infrastructure, including power generation assets and high‑voltage transmission lines serving remote and regional areas.
We support extractive industries and energy retailers across both on‑grid and off‑grid settings, drawing on deep experience in developing, owning and operating gas‑fired, solar and battery energy storage assets to deliver reliable and flexible power solutions.

Southern Cross Energy North (SCEN)
At our Southern Cross Energy North system in Western Australia, TransAlta partnered with BHP Nickel West to respond to a significant change in customer load while maintaining system reliability and cost efficiency.
By enabling grid-forming capability on the existing battery energy storage system, TransAlta created the ability for the isolated power system to operate on 100% renewable generation during periods of sufficient solar production.
This solution:
- Reduced fuel consumption and operating costs
- Maintained voltage and frequency stability in an off-grid environment
- Improved overall system resilience
- Demonstrated flexible integration of solar, battery storage and existing generation
The project reflects TransAlta’s ability to adapt infrastructure to changing customer requirements while maintaining safe, reliable operations.
