Data centre development at Keephills
In February 2026, TransAlta entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Canada Pension Plan Investments and Brookfield to advance phased data centre development at our Keephills site in Alberta.
Under the framework:
- TransAlta will be the exclusive site and power provider
- An initial long-term power purchase agreement of approximately 230 MW is contemplated
- Additional phases aggregating up to 1 GW of load are under evaluation
- Development remains subject to regulatory approvals and definitive agreements
By leveraging existing generation, transmission access and land position, the project is designed to support reliable, dispatchable power supply while enabling scalable development aligned with customer demand.
This initiative reflects our disciplined approach to legacy site redevelopment—prioritizing contracted cash flow, infrastructure optimization and long-term value creation.

Heartland Generation acquisition
In December 2024, TransAlta completed the acquisition of Heartland Generation from Energy Capital Partners, adding a portfolio of natural gas-fired and cogeneration facilities across Alberta.
The transaction added approximately 1,747 MW of complementary generating capacity, including contracted cogeneration, peaking generation and legacy gas-fired thermal generation, along with transmission capacity and development opportunities.
The acquisition strengthened TransAlta’s position in Alberta’s energy-only market by expanding flexible, fast-ramping generation that supports reliability as renewable generation increases across the grid.
By integrating the Heartland portfolio into our Alberta fleet, TransAlta is able to leverage existing operational expertise, energy marketing capabilities and scale to enhance portfolio optimization.
This acquisition reflects our disciplined approach to portfolio growth – strengthening reliable generation capacity while delivering accretive free cash flow and long-term value for shareholders.
