The facility's two generating units annually produce about 5.5 million megawatt-hours of energy. Each unit consists of a boiler, turbine, and generator and each have a full load capacity of 400 megawatts.

Both units at the facility were converted from burning coal to natural gas. SH2 was converted in 2020 and SH1 in 2021.

The Sheerness cooling pond, which is filled from the Red Deer River, is also a source of water for the town of Hanna and surrounding communities, irrigation water for farmers and a recreation area.
