Brazeau Hydro Hybridization Project

Proposed changes to TransAlta’s Brazeau Hydroelectrical Facility

About the Facility

About the Project

TransAlta is proposing to augment the Brazeau Hydro Facility by adding a battery energy storage system (BESS) to each of its two existing hydro generators. The BESS systems are anticipated to be approximately 10-megawatts (MW) each and will be situated adjacent to the existing substation on previously disturbed lands.

What is a Battery Energy Storage System?

BESS consists of battery cells grouped together into modules. Battery modules are housed in containers or enclosures similar in size to a shipping container.

The batteries are projected to have a lifespan of 20 to 25 years. At the end of their useful life, the batteries will be disposed of or recycled according to environmental regulations and the manufacturer’s recycling programs.

TransAlta’s WindCharger Project was the first utility-scale BESS project developed in Alberta and has been in operation since 2020.

Health and Safety

TransAlta is currently developing a project-specific Emergency Response Plan (“ERP”) to be submitted with the AUC Rule 007 application. When the project has been constructed, the ERP for the existing Brazeau facility will be updated to include the facilities associated with the Brazeau Hydro Hybridization Project.

To develop the ERP, TransAlta will engage with local Indigenous communities and First Responders to identify important elements to be considered.
