Akolkolex
The Akolkolex facility began commercial operation in 1995 when the generator was first synchronized with the BC Hydro electric system. The powerhouse is located adjacent to the Akolkolex River, 25 kilometres southeast of Revelstoke, B.C. The river discharges into the Upper Arrow Reservoir, which is part of the Columbia River Basin.
This run-of-river hydroelectric facility is interconnected to BC Hydro by a 3.5 kilometre transmission line, including a 200 metre buried section through the forest near the powerhouse, and a 500 metre clear span across the Upper Arrow Reservoir.
Akolkolex generates about 37,000 megawatt hours per year of electricity.
Power generated is sold to BC Hydro under a 20 year contract.
TransAlta owns and operates the Akolkolex facility through its wholly owned subsidiary Canadian Hydro Developers.
