Centralia Unit 2 Conversion

In December 2025, TransAlta entered into a long-term Tolling Agreement with Puget Sound Energy to convert the 700 MW Centralia Unit 2 facility from coal to natural gas.

The project extends the operating life of the facility under a fixed-price capacity arrangement through 2044, leveraging existing turbines, transmission infrastructure and site assets.

Once converted, Unit 2 will serve as a flexible, dispatchable resource capable of supporting grid reliability during periods of high demand and low renewable generation.

This project:

  • Significantly reduces greenhouse gas and other emissions relative to coal operations
  • Eliminates coal ash and mercury emissions from the site
  • Supports approximately 700 construction jobs and more than 40 long-term roles
  • Provides contracted cash flow through 2044
  • Demonstrates disciplined redevelopment of existing infrastructure

The conversion reflects TransAlta’s practical approach to advancing legacy sites – prioritizing reliability, environmental improvement and responsible execution.

Strategic investment in Nova Clean Energy

In 2025, TransAlta made a strategic investment in Nova Clean Energy, LLC, a renewable energy developer with a growing presence in the western United States. This partnership provides TransAlta with exclusive access to a high-performing development team focused on projects across the U.S., including within the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) region.

Through this agreement, TransAlta has:

  • Exclusive options to purchase Nova’s advanced-stage clean energy projects
  • The opportunity to convert its position into equity
  • Access to a multi-technology pipeline of more than 5 GW of high-quality projects
  • The ability to enhance project economics through our energy marketing and growth capabilities
This investment strengthens TransAlta’s long-term pipeline while preserving capital discipline and enhancing our presence in WECC.

Horizon Hill Wind Facility

In May 2024, TransAlta achieved commercial operation of the 200 MW Horizon Hill Wind Facility located in Logan County, Oklahoma.

The project is fully contracted to Meta Platforms Inc., which receives both renewable electricity and environmental attributes from the facility under a long-term power purchase agreement.

The facility includes 34 Vestas wind turbines and delivers contracted renewable generation while supporting TransAlta’s portfolio of long-term contracted assets.

The project:

  • Provides long-term contracted revenues through a power purchase agreement with Meta
  • Brings TransAlta’s U.S. renewables fleet to more than 1 GW of installed capacity
  • Includes a 10-year transfer agreement for approximately 80 percent of the production tax credits generated by the facility

As our footprint grows, it’s key that we find strong partners who can help us continue to meet our renewable energy goal by bringing new renewable energy to the grid. We are excited to partner with TransAlta to make this 200 MW project a reality,” says Urvi Parekh, Meta Director of Renewable Energy

Horizon Hill demonstrates TransAlta’s disciplined approach to renewable development – delivering contracted clean energy solutions for customers while strengthening the long-term stability of the company’s generation portfolio.
