The Alberta Wire – December 5, 2017

The first week of December is already over!  Alberta power prices settled at $20.20/MWh, a ~6% decrease over the previous week. Since last week, forward prices in 2018 and 2019 are up an average of $0.25/MWh and $0.50/MWh respectively. Prices have seen significant volatility in the last half of 2017 as a result of greater forced outages and high year over year demand growth.

December gas prices continue to hover around $2/GJ mark, up ~6% over last week for an average weekly price of $1.99/GJ. Forwards remain relatively steady.

Saskatchewan has released a climate change plan, with no mention of a carbon tax specifically. The province will require emitters greater than 25,000 tonnes annually to pay, but the standards will not be set until next year. The plan received praise from the agricultural industry and the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, but there are still changes to be made to satisfy Federal standards.
