Geothermal
TransAlta has a mix of geothermal assets — 164 MW comprised of 10 facilities —, which our company acquired in 2003 when we purchased a 50 per cent interest in CE Generation LLC. MidAmerican is our partner and the manager and operator of the geothermal power plants in the Imperial Valley region of southern California. These assets are unique in our generation fleet, tapping heat from deep underground hot reservoirs, between 900 and 2,100 metres (3,000 and 7,000 feet), to create steam that powers turbines to produce electricity. Geothermal energy is considered renewable because it is constantly replenished without fuel consumption.
